Local PCB file review

Offline Gerber Viewer for Secure PCB File Review

Open and inspect PCB manufacturing files directly on your Windows computer. GerbView works locally, so your Gerber, Excellon and ODB++ files do not need to be uploaded to an online viewer.

Why use an offline Gerber viewer?

Online Gerber viewers can be convenient for a quick look at a PCB dataset. However, uploading design files is not suitable for every company, customer project or working environment. Some teams must keep manufacturing data within their own computers, networks or approved storage systems.

An offline viewer provides a straightforward alternative. The application is installed locally, the files are opened locally, and normal viewing does not depend on a browser session or a remote processing service.

Your files remain in your chosen environment

GerbView does not require you to submit PCB design data to an online viewer. You decide where the files are stored and who can access them, subject to your organization's own security controls.

Benefits of local PCB file review

No design upload

Open supported PCB manufacturing files from a local drive, network share or other organization-controlled storage.

Offline availability

Continue viewing, measuring and comparing files when Internet access is unavailable, restricted or intentionally disconnected.

Controlled workflow

Use your existing access controls, retention rules, backup procedures and approved project locations.

Consistent toolset

Use the same installed application for viewing, printing, inspection, measurement, conversion and revision comparison.

When local processing may matter

The decision depends on your organization's policies and the type of data being reviewed. A locally installed viewer can be particularly useful in these situations:

Confidential product development

New boards may reveal product architecture, component placement, interfaces or other intellectual property.

Customer-owned PCB data

Contract manufacturers, consultants and service providers may receive files that must remain within an agreed environment.

Restricted networks

Some production systems, laboratories and engineering workstations have limited or no Internet connectivity.

Internal review procedures

Organizations may need review tools that fit established access, archival and revision-control processes.

Offline and online viewers serve different needs

An offline application is not automatically the right choice for every situation, and an online viewer is not automatically unsuitable. The important question is which workflow matches the sensitivity of the files and the work that must be completed.

Consideration Offline desktop viewer Online viewer
File handling Files can remain in local or organization-controlled storage. Files are normally uploaded for browser-based processing.
Internet connection Not required for normal local viewing. Normally required to upload and review files.
Access control Uses the organization's computer, network and storage controls. Also depends on the service provider's account and data-handling arrangements.
Quick external sharing Requires a separate approved sharing method. May offer convenient browser links or shared sessions.
Availability Available wherever the application is installed and licensed. Depends on connectivity and continued service availability.

Gerber viewer upload and privacy checklist

Before uploading Gerber, Excellon or ODB++ files to an online viewer, consider how the service will handle your manufacturing data. The answers may be especially important when the files contain confidential designs, customer-owned information or unreleased products.

Is an upload required?

Determine whether the files are processed locally in your browser or transferred to a remote server. Browser-based software does not necessarily mean that processing remains on your computer.

How long are files retained?

Check whether uploaded files are deleted immediately after processing, retained for a defined period or stored until you remove them manually.

Where is the data stored?

Find out which country or region stores and processes the files, and whether this is compatible with your contracts, company policies and regulatory requirements.

Who can access the files?

Review the provider's access controls and whether its employees, hosting providers or other subprocessors may have access to uploaded data.

How may the data be used?

Read the privacy policy and terms of service carefully. Check whether uploaded content may be analyzed, reused, shared or used to improve or train automated systems.

Can sharing links expose the design?

If the service creates shareable links, determine whether they are private, access-controlled, time-limited and revocable.

Is transmission and storage protected?

Check whether files are encrypted while being transferred and while stored, and whether the provider documents its security and incident-response practices.

Are you authorized to upload the files?

Confirm that customer agreements, nondisclosure agreements and internal policies permit the PCB data to be submitted to an external service.

Prefer to keep the files in your own environment?

GerbView opens Gerber, Excellon and ODB++ files directly from local or organization-controlled storage. The files do not need to be submitted to an online viewing service.

Offline does not mean automatically secure

Local processing avoids the need to upload files to a viewer service, but security still depends on the workstation, network, storage, access permissions and operating procedures. GerbView should be used within your organization's established security framework.

A practical offline review workflow

Receive and store the manufacturing package

Place the files in an approved local or network project location. Keep the original package unchanged so that it can be traced to its source and revision.

Open the files directly in GerbView

Load the Gerber layers, Excellon drill data or complete ODB++Design dataset without sending it to a remote viewer.

Inspect, measure and compare

Control layer visibility and colors, query apertures and drill tools, measure important features and compare the release with an earlier revision.

Create approved documentation

Print the selected data or create PDF, DXF or other supported output when permitted by the project workflow. Store the results in the approved location.

More than an offline Gerber reader

GerbView combines local viewing with tools for PCB manufacturing review and documentation:

  • Open Gerber RS-274D and RS-274X files.
  • Read Gerber X2 file and pad attributes and Gerber X3 component information.
  • Open Excellon drill and routing files.
  • Open ODB++Design datasets, including supported component and net data.
  • Display multiple layers with individual colors, visibility and ordering.
  • Inspect aperture, drill-tool, component, pin and net information when available.
  • Measure distances, areas and perimeters with optional snapping.
  • Compare Gerber revisions and highlight graphical differences.
  • Print and convert PCB data to PDF, DXF, SVG and other supported formats.
  • Add markups and review information for documentation.

Perpetual licensing for a desktop workflow

GerbView is available with a perpetual license. Once purchased, the licensed version can continue to be used without an ongoing subscription. Each new license includes one year of software maintenance with technical support and software updates; renewal after the first year is optional.

This model can suit organizations that prefer installed Windows software, predictable ownership and the option to decide when maintenance should be renewed.

Frequently asked questions

Can GerbView open Gerber files without an Internet connection?

Yes. GerbView is installed on a Windows computer and can open supported files locally without requiring an Internet connection for normal viewing and review work.

Do PCB files need to be uploaded to use GerbView?

No. Gerber, Excellon, ODB++ and other supported files are opened from local or organization-controlled storage. They do not need to be uploaded to an online viewer.

Which PCB manufacturing formats can GerbView open?

GerbView supports Gerber RS-274D and RS-274X, Gerber X2 and X3 attributes, Excellon drill files, ODB++Design, PDF, DXF, HPGL/2 and several other formats.

Can an offline Gerber viewer be used on a restricted network?

GerbView can perform normal local viewing without an Internet connection. Installation and use must still follow the organization's software deployment, licensing and security policies.

Is an offline Gerber viewer automatically secure?

No software is automatically secure simply because it works offline. Local processing removes the need to upload PCB files to a viewer service, but overall security still depends on your computer, network, storage, access controls and procedures.
